Gertrud was married to – more known artist –Fred Schumm. The two met and fell in love at Sculpture Center in New York. Her family let me know that she would occasionally hide parts of Fred's sculptures in her paintings and i believe some of the geometric objects in this composition were from his work. This and the other works we have by Gertrud were pulled out of her cottage in Cresco, PA which coincidentally was gifted to the Schumm's by Sculpture Center and had previously been used for artist residencies.
